NVWE Notes: Vividly expressive of Santa Lucia Highlands fruit, the nose of this gorgeous Chardonnay opens with an intensely zesty splash of lemon sorbet, Fuji applesauce, tangerine, peach blossom, white rose, honeysuckle, vanilla wafer, toasted meringue, peach pit and nut husk scents, firmed by undercurrents of white pepper and “river-stone” minerality. It is tongue-tingling, racy and brilliantly forthcoming on the palate, where lemon, lime, and orange zest notes are prelude to a rush of pear skin, red apple, orange souffle, pineapple upside down cake, meringue, brioche, toasted nut and mineral flavors. The finish is deep, rich and lingering, yet is most memorable for its soft-edged yet spectacular zest. A fabulous seafood wine already, it should mellow and expand for several years but never lose the wonderful energy that is its hallmark.
NVWE Notes: Like a gorgeous “Côte Blonde” from the Rhone Valley, this Syrah puts a feminine stamp on very intense fruit. The aromas are a focused, soft-edged perfume of Italian Maraschino cherry, black raspberry, blood orange, Mr. Lincoln rose, bresaola, toffee, sage and peppercorn scents. The palate-feel is sleek, yet the flavors are tongue coating, with sweet red cherry, raspberry, fig, orange peel tea, hunter’s broth, pink and black peppercorn, rose, laurel, sage and bay leaf rising above graphite, charcoal and bitter chocolate undercurrents. The finish is racy, supple and long, while the tannins are smothered in fruit and spice. Terrific now, it will certainly improve over the next four or five years. 73 cases made.
