This gutsy Merlot is fruit-forward, yet beautifully accented by savory spice, and its aromas of black cherry, blackberry, black currant, dark earth, toasty vanilla, black peppercorn and humidor-spice find a dark harmony. The flavors veer toward the dark side as well, yet there is style and zest to counterpoint the wines intensity and grip. The finish is long, palate-coating and complex, and the star anise, licorice root, black fig, date, black peppercorn and dark tobacco notes never challenge the dominance of the sweet-natured black cherry and blackberry flavors at its core. Built for dark roasts, steaks and rich stews, it is delicious now, but is certain to improve for several years.

NVWE Notes: This is an astoundingly fine bottling of California Nebbiolo, a grape that rarely succeeds in our state. It is bright, yet elegant, with gorgeous, precisely delineated scents of cranberry, strawberry, dried raspberry, blood orange, red rose, dried lemon peel, mulling spices, star anise, white and pink peppercorn and coriander seed. There is a terrific blance of zest and grip on the palate and super length to focused flavors that are a virtual mirror of the aromas. Lighthearted, yet deep and sophisticated at the finish, it delivers its complex, vivacious fruit with a balance that disguises its firm undercurrent of tannin. Expect maturity around 2020, if a bottle still remains at that point. 105 cases made.
NVWE Notes: Deep, rich and slightly exotic, this outstanding bottling marries aromas of green melon, lemon grass, peach, kiwi, pineapple, caramelized golden figs and river-stone mineral hints to create a generous and seductive perfume. Flavors of lemon sorbet, melon, green apple skin, pineapple core, kiwi and fig join drying mineral and spicy lemon grass notes to make things brighter and even more obviously food-worthy on the palate. The finish is juicy-zesty and lingering and the wine is delicious all by itself. Versatile, it should be as appealing with veal sweetbreads in a creamy wine sauce as it will be with tropical-accented seafood entrees, and it should grow ever more attractive over the next 18-24 months. 240 cases produced.
