DRAGONETTE CHARDONNAY, DUVARITA VINEYARD, SANTA BARBARA COUNTY 2014

NVWE Notes: Dragonette takes a gentler, more early-drinking approach to Duvarita fruit in contrast to the powerhouse style Paul Lato favors, so this wine caresses rather than overwhelms. In the nose, scents of grapefruit sorbet, lemon drop, lemon curd and quince jelly create a racy counterpoint to richer notes of white peach, tarte tatin, orange soufflé, brioche and white rose. The same zesty-creamy interplay brings a sleekness to otherwise palate-coating flavors of lemon cream pie, baked green apple, quince, white peach pit, grapefruit zest, orange zest, almond, toasted hazelnut and to a pretty strain of Crenshaw melon that grows ever richer with airing. The finish is long and texturally rich, yet a hint of saline minerality keeps everything dinner-worthy. 175 cases produced.

DRAGONETTE SAUVIGNON BLANC, GRASSINI VINEYARD, HAPPY CANYON OF SANTA BARBARA 2014

NVWE Notes: The rich aromatic cornucopia that this bottling so often provides is on full display with the 2014. The nose layers scents of mango, guava, Asian pear, green apple, lemon grass, pink grapefruit, lime zest, tangerine oil, peach pit and dried peach over a subtly mineral background. Things prove as plush as expected on the palate, where the fresh and tropical fruit flavors are contrasted by peach pit, dried peach, Persian raisin and lemon grass, the whole carrying through a lingering finish where hints of grain, brioche and “riverstone” minerals peek through. And if considerably better in another year or two, this one is loads of fun already. 225 cases produced.
