NVWE NOTES: This old vine Zin is deep and almost creamy-rich to the nose, where dark sweet cherries, cracked black peppercorns, pomegranate molasses, blueberries, dried flowers and hunter’s broth scents join to make a powerful but impressively harmonious whole. It is also outright powerful on the palate, with concentrated flavors of sweet dark cherry, raspberry, black pepper, bouillon and some eathy-truffley undercurrents. The finish is long, but firmed by tannins, which accentuate the wine’s impression of dryness and seem to elevate the black pepper spice a bit. Although it should be better if given 2+ years of cellar time, airing should make it attractive right now with barbecued ribs or garlicky lamb preparations. A field blend from 120 year old vines: 82% Zinfandel, 8% Alicante Bouschet, 8% Petite Sirah and 2% drawn from 13 other varietals. 468 cases produced.
