Notes on the C. Donatiello Floodgate Vineyard Vineyard Pinot Noir Russian River Valley 2006 : PINOT REPORT REVIEW: 90 POINTS Medium-deep ruby color; earthy, savory spices, cherry and berry aromas; big, rich earthy red cherry and berry flavors with savory spices, herbal notes, sweet oak; good structure and balance; long finish. Complex, savory spice notes highlight this Pinot from 30-year-old vines in the winery's Floodgate Vineyard in the heart of the Russian River Valley. Needs some time to open up in the glass. 175 cases made. PinotReport issue # 54

NVWE NOTES: Already well-evolved and complex, the nose of this stylish Pinot has floral and pink peppercorn scents, behind more forthcoming aromas of Santa Rosa plum, sumac, smoked meat and new leather. It is brighter and fruitier on the palate, where boysenberry, Santa Rosa plum, pink peppercorn, dried orange, yellow rose, roasted grain and some powdered sumac all add contributions. Long and elegant, it will be a beautiful companion to roast duck, goose or lamb. Expect it to get even better over the next two years or so. 175 cases produced.

WINEMAKER NOTES: The Floodgate Vineyard is located at the precise spot where the Russian River bends west, reaching towards the Pacific Ocean. The maritime influences of foggy and windy weather have a profound effect on the grapes. The bedrock of our plantings at the Floodgate Vineyard, a clutch of thirty-year-old grapevines, produces fruit that is at once both refined and ethereal.
