WINE SPECTATOR REVIEW: 93 POINTS Cellar Selection A dark, dense, richly flavored wine, with tiers of currant, mint, blackberry, sage and mineral. Packs in lots of stuffing while maintaining a sense of fine balance and elegance. Long and persistent flavors on the finish, with firm yet well-integrated tannins. Could be a long-ager. Honoring its late winemaker and founder Joe Heitz, this is a fairly dramatic youngster made from young vines. No shyness on the price; longtime collectors would do well to check this one out. Best from 2004 through 2014. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 5,620 cases made. (JL) Issue: Jun 15, 2002 WINE ADVOCATE REVIEW: 90 POINTS This wine exhibits a dense ruby/purple color as well as sweet tannin, and copious black currant fruit intermixed with soil undertones and licorice. The wine is medium to full-bodied, pure, ripe, and nicely-textured with a long finish. Heitz Wine Cellars has followed their impressive 1996 with this equally splendid special commemorative cuvee honoring the late Joe Heitz. The famed minty/eucalyptus character found in older vintages of Martha's Vineyard is submerged by the depth of fruit possessed by the 1997. It will improve and age for 15+ years.
