Notes on the Martella Hammer California Syrah 2002 : NVWE NOTES: The bouquet of this immediately attractive Syrah is both gutsy and elegantly floral, as scents of raspberry, red rose petals, powdered sumac, white pepper and earth team with laurel, sage and a cinnamon candy-like note in a focused and forward mix. It turns dryer than expected on the palate, as the plum/raspberry fruit and the pepper/dry herb notes are joined by a harder “iron ore-like” undercurrent. The result is a supply, deep and lingering melange, that is decidedly complex and food-worthy. It will be very versatile, handling barbecued pork, roast lamb. pizza and ragout with equal efficiency. 1,056 cases produced. Blended with 2.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2.5% Cabernet Franc: fruit sourced from Lodi, Mendocino and Napa Counties.

WINEMAKER NOTES: My Swiss-Italian surname, Martella, translates to “hammer”, and this delicious wine “nails down” classic Syrah character. Its bright fruit-driven flavors are accented with peppery spices and soft, rounded tannins. The warm vineyards of the Clements-Lodi area is responsible for the jam-packed cherry/berry flavors, while 2.5 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon (Mendocino County) and 2.5 per cent Cabernet Franc (Napa Valley) add structure and rich aroma to the luscious blend. Sixteen months of barrel aging in French and American oak add an extra layer of toasty spice to this velvet-wrapped hammer of a wine. Enjoy it with pastas
in cooked tomato sauce and Italian sausage, grilled vegetables, lamb stew and spicy pizzas. 1056 cases produced.
