CONNOISSEUR'S GUIDE REVIEW: 91 POINTS Morgan's headline, limited production bottling from its home vineyard in the northern end of the Santa Lucia Highlands once again plays off bright fruit against slightly elevated ripeness. Its aromas and flavors feature notes of cherry, raspberry and creamy oak, and its palatefeel is supple to start yet firms up and runs to a bit of cranberry-like pertness in the latter palate. While attractive now, it is bound to improve with three to five years of quiet bottle aging. It’s not clearly a whole lot better than Morgan’s regular Double L Pinot, which costs far less. But it is more powerful in the intensity of blackberries and cherries, as well as oak. If power in California Pinot Noir is your thing, go for it. Should age well for up to eight years. - S.H. (6/1/2010) NVWE NOTES: This enormous young Pinot is never less than grand scale, and its aromas are a layering of oak-derived spice, mineral notes and opulent fruit. In the nose boysenberry, dark cherry and dry rose scents form a veneer over aromas of sweet vanilla, mocha, roasted grain, bouillon and Darjeeling tea. It is fleshy and rich on the palate, with luxurious wood treatment and a powerful core of youthful fruit that stops just this side of jammy. The finish is extremely youthful and very long, with flavors of dried cherry, Oriental plum sauce, powdered sumac, mocha and crushed rose. Expect this big beauty to get a lot more sophisticated as it ages and to be worthy of a great beef roast even in its youth. This bottling represents the best three barrels of the Double L Vineyard.
