ENKIDU PINOT NOIR "E", SONOMA COUNTY 2017

NVWE Notes: Forthcoming in aroma and flavor, supple in texture, yet zesty, and well defined in both aromatic presentation and on the palate, this is a complete and very tasty Pinot Noir. The nose and the flavors that mirror it are an elegant melange of strawberry, red cherry, red plum, pomegranate,  raspberry “creamsickle”, red rose, cinnamon stick, star anise, white tea and sandalwood. Certainly delicious already, it will be more so next year, if it is not consumed for the holiday dinner it calls for.

 

 

 

ODONATA PETITE SIRAH, MACHADO CREEK VINEYARD, SANTA CLARA VALLEY 2015

NVWE Notes: Big, dark, juicy-rich and age-worthy, this full-bodied red is built for service with darkly caramelized roasts, braised beef short ribs, ragouts and winter’s full-flavored stews. The aromas are a brooding mix of black plum, mulberry, blueberry, grilled black fig, cola, root beer bark, black pepper, cedar, toffee, tobacco, leather, clove, dried herbs and forest mushrooms. It is firm in texture, yet expressive and lingering on the palate, unfolding with airing as a gutsier, more youthful replica of the nose. Enjoy it in its youth, or wait a few years for its layers of flavor to evolve into more gracious harmony.

 

CALSTAR ZINFANDEL "ZA ZA ZIN", LODI 2016

NVWE Notes: This dinner-friendly Zin offers flavorful, direct fruit balanced by light-hearted zest.  It opens with aromas of red cherry, red plum, raspberry-vanilla “creamsickle”, strawberry candy, pink peppercorn, clove, leather and pie crust. Suggestions of figgy richness and dark earthiness are added in as undercurrents on the palate, but they do not blunt the tangy fruit and spice which linger at the finish. Ready to drink, it will cozy-up to a pizza or caress a steak, yet won’t overwhelm roast chicken or a pork chop. 100% Zinfandel, from the old vines in Stokes vineyard.

BALLETTO CHARDONNAY UNOAKED "TERESA'S", RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY 2017

NVWE Notes: This is a bright, easygoing Chardonnay with surprising depth. The nose fans-out a genteel mix of white peach, green apple, melon rind, lemon, lime, orange blossom, white rose and brioche scents. It is as bright as expected on the palate, where the citrus notes bring freshness while the stone fruit, apple and spice notes are still a bit less developed. The finish lingers with fine refreshment and the balance is delightfully food-worthy.

 

 

 

YORKVILLE CELLARS SAUVIGNON BLANC, RANDLE HILL VINEYARD, YORKVILLE HIGHLANDS 2017

NVWE Notes: Not flashy, yet satisfying from start to finish, this pretty bottling opens with aromas of grapefruit zest, fresh apple, honeydew melon, lemon, lime, lemongrass, cucumber and a hint of orange blossom. These elements are notable on the palate as well, where the texture is supple and the impression light hearted. As the wine airs, hints of golden fig, Persian raisin and white rose make an appearance. While perfect for roasted lemon-garlic chicken, it will serve as nicely with sole in butter sauce, or sashimi. 100% Sauvignon Blanc, organically farmed.

NVWE Notes: Immediately attractive as a sipper, this fully dinner-balanced bottling is also surprisingly complex. The aromas and the generous flavors that follow are a deftly tooled medley of honeydew melon, golden delicious applesauce, peach, cantaloupe, lemon, orange blossom, white rose, brioche, white pepper, chamomile, coriander seed and clove: all  poised above “riverstone” mineral hints. It is ready to enjoy by itself, with Holiday turkey, and with a wide variety of other edible joys.
