ARKENSTONE SAUVIGNON BLANC "ESTATE", HOWELL MOUNTAIN NAPA VALLEY 2014
Robert Parker - Wine Advocate
The 2014 Sauvignon Blanc Estate, 92% Sauvignon Blanc and 7% Semillon, was fermented in equal parts new French oak, used French oak and a concrete egg. The wine is a killer example of this blend. It spent 18 months in barrel prior to being bottled. There are 630 cases. With terrific fruit intensity, fabulous aromatics of honeysuckle, fig, caramelized citrus, melons and an almost waxiness, this beautiful, precise, incredibly pure, medium-bodied Sauvignon Blanc is super-intense and a real big-time winner. Drink it over the next 4-5 years, although it’s purest certainly in it exuberant youth because of the aromatic fireworks.
NVWE Notes: This always age-worthy wine is at times truly splendid, and the 2014 could prove as great as the remarkable 2009. The nose is creamy rich, vibrantly fresh and of chiseled focus: with scents of golden fig, gooseberry, mock orange, white pepper, key lime, lemon cream pie and honey dipped nuts fanning-out in more or less equal proportion. That extravagance is tempered on the palate, where hard mineral notes, firming acidity and toasty oak notes tighten-up the wines otherwise dramatic creaminess. The flavors are extremely long, if clearly youthful, with notes of stone fruits, citron, honey-drenched nuts and a bit of kiwi seeming most prominent at the moment. Terrific now, it should be glorious in four years. Blended with a bit of Semillon.
