AU BON CLIMAT CHARDONNAY "NUITS-BLANCHES AU BOUGE", SANTA MARIA VALLEY 2011
NVWE Notes: This is stylishly composed, elegantly rich and altogether impressive Chardonnay. The nose melds lemon custard, white peach, baked apple, toasted almond, baking-spice and nut husk aromas into a decidedly Burgundian package. On the palate, the texture is suavely rich and the fruit flavors never less that ideally ripe, yet the balance is pin-point so the wine stays light on its feet. The finish is lingering and well evolved, with lovely apple, peach tart, lemon cream pie, toasted almond and baking-spice flavors that are as youthfully energetic as they are polished. It is truly delicious and should hold its quality for several years at the least. 660 cases produced.
The slightly oxidized nose on this wine, which is sourced from the K Block at Bien Nacido Vineyard and Jim Clendenen's own Le Bon Climat Vineyard, shows seared marshmallow, hot Marcona almonds and honey, with a noticeable alkalinity. The browned-butter palate is cut by a lemon peel zing that evolves into truffle salt and roasted nuts. All elements linger deep into the finish.
Au Bon Climat's 2011 Chardonnay Nuits-Blanches au Bouge is quite overt within the style of the year. Yellow stone fruit, honey, mint, butter, spices and wild flowers flesh out in a supple, expressive Chardonnay endowed with notable depth and intensity. The finish alone is utterly exquisite.
