BIG BASIN GSM "GABILAN MOUNTAINS", MONTEREY 2012
One of the riper, more full-bodied wines in the portfolio, the 2012 GSM Gabilan Mountains checks in as 56% Grenache, 39% Syrah and 15% Mourvedre that spent 20 months in oak. It offers a ton of black fruits, plums, peppery spice and road tar to go with a concentrated, rich, textured, if not decadent style on the palate. There’s plenty of obvious oak here, so give it a year or two in the cellar.
Tasted next to the 2013 and 2014, the 2012 GSM Gabilan Mountain shows the limits of the vintage. There is good up-front depth and juiciness, but the 2012 comes across is a bit overripe and lacking both the complexity and nuance of the two successive vintages. I would prefer to drink this tasty Grenache/Syrah/Mourvèdre blend sooner rather than later. 2016 - 2020. Antonio Galloni Jul 2016
