CARTER CABERNET SAUVIGNON "CARTER", NAPA VALLEY 2016
Very deep purple-black in color, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Carter begins just a little closed and youthfully reticent before revealing loads of black fruit and earth-inspired notes, including baked black cherries, cassis, blackberry pie and tilled soil with hints of fungi, underbrush, scorched earth and mossy bark. Full-bodied and densely packed with black fruit and earth layers, it has a firm backbone of grainy tannins and a lively line, finishing long and mineral laced. This needs at least 5-7 years and then should drink for the next 30+ years.
NVWE Notes: Deep, broodingly rich, full of coiled energy and tannic backbone, this wine is in every respect a grander effort that the two previous “Carter” Cabernet Blends. The aromas are a melange of red and black fruits, herbal spice, and sweet barrel notes that fan-out as a focused perfume of red currant, red cherry, black raspberry, red plum, blackberry, blueberry, black currant, black fig, vanilla toffee, baking-spice, coffee bean, dark tobacco, clove, cedar, licorice, date and bay leaf. It proves every bit as muscular as expected on the palate, with tongue-drenching fruit density, loads of sweet-savory spice and a spine of leathery tannin. The finish is ultra-long and it’s packed with coiled fruit, pretty barrel notes and herbal spice. Ten years or more from it’s full expression and likely to live for three decades and beyond, this is by any standard a great Cabernet.
