CARTER CABERNET SAUVIGNON, WEITZ VINEYARD, OAKVILLE NAPA VALLEY 2016
Very deep purple-black in color, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Weitz Vineyard opens with notions of baked blackcurrants, preserved plums, blackberry compote and licorice plus touches of tar, chargrill, pan fried herbs and iron ore. Full-bodied and laden with taut, muscular fruit, it has a solid line of grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing with an herbal lift.
NVWE Notes: Boldly rich, focused and clearly grand-scale when first uncorked, this wine grows steadily in refinement as it airs. With airing, the textbook “Weitz” aromas of sour red cherry, black cherry, red currant, black raspberry, cassis, clove, cedar, leather, licorice root, baking spices, Victorian toffee, sweet tobacco leaf, vanilla and nougat become fully in evidence. The wine is plush and almost fleshy on the palate, and has a deep reserve of tannic grip under it’s bath of juicy fruit and pretty spice. The finish is youthfully firm, massive in scale and ultra-long. If eight years or more from revealing all of its brilliance, this wine is certainly a pleasurable mouthful now. This beauty will show best with darkly caramelized meats.
