CHALONE PINOT NOIR "HERITAGE VINES", CHALONE 2014
NVWE Notes: More concentrated if less-evolved than it’s lovely 2013 sibling, the 2014 should be even grander in time. Opening with coiled, darkly ripe scents of black cherry, Italian Maraschino cherry, cherry pit, blueberry, dark rose, sandalwood, cardamom, star anise, sumac berry, nut husk, chalk and humidor-spice the wine seems, at first, all muscle. Airing brings more openness, more gentility and a swing toward red fruits and sweet-savory spices. With more extended airing, the aromas and the lingering flavors that follow fan-out as a piquantly bright melange of Amarena cherry jam, bottled red cherry, Lingonberry, Santa Rosa plum, Umeboshi plum, pink peppercorn, sumac berry, sandalwood, star anise, cardamom, pencil shavings and chalky minerality. There is fine underlying tannic grip and a food-worthy balance and this already classy wine will grow more so over the next five years and beyond.
