CLEMENTINE CARTER GRENACHE, KIMSEY VINEYARD, BALLARD CANYON 2016
San Francisco Wine Panel
NVWE Notes: Polish, style, balance and focused fruit are hallmarks of this delicious wine, yet so are dinner-worthiness and enough submerged tannin to ensure future excellence. The aromas are a fresh, chiseled mix of sweet-natured red plum, raspberry, red cherry, red currant, dried cranberry, red rose, pink peppercorn, bay leaf, clove, star anise and lavender scents. Kirsh, red cherry, red plum, red currant and raspberry lead on the palate, where the mouth-feel is racy and the flavors lingering. The finish is structured, yet silky and fruit-centric, and that fruit is harmoniously contrasted by spice notes of peppercorn, dried herbs, leather and star anise. If already a near-perfect match to a fatty pork roast, it promises increasing class and depth for those patient enough to wait a few years. Only 100 cases produced from the Kimsey Vineyard in Ballard Canyon, Santa Barbara.
The 2016 Kimsey Vineyard Grenache wafts from the glass with a lovely nose of raspberry, cherries, spice, rose petal and orange rind. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with an ample core of ripe fruit that avoids any confectionery excess, good depth and concentration and a long, chewy finish that will need a little time to soften. This is an impressively fragrant, characterful Grenache.
