COBB PINOT NOIR, EMMALINE ANN VINEYARD, SONOMA COAST 2014
From a three-acre spot known to get a hearty dose of fog, this wine speaks to cool-climate character, unveiling crisp floral layers of dried sage and white pepper from the get-go. Those aspects are joined by rose, lavender and cranberry-rhubarb on the palate, finishing with subtle offerings of mushroom and forest floor.
NVWE Notes: This pretty wine opens with an elegant perfume of red boysenberry, Maraschino cherry, red raspberry, “red vines” licorice, rose petal, cinnamon, star anise, toffee and sweet dried herbs, stylishly poised above genteel mineral notes. It is supple yet bright on the palate, where it replicates the attractive aromatic profile, while layering-on flavors of wild strawberry and orange peel tea. The finish is very long, although the fruit is still a bit youthfully reserved, which makes the savory notes seem slightly elevated. A beautiful companion to fatty meats right now, it will be considerably better if allowed another two to four years of cellaring. 310 cases produced.
