DUTTON GOLDFIELD CHARDONNAY, RUED VINEYARD, GREEN VALLEY OF RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY 2013
NVWE Notes: Rued is a vineyard famous for its zesty fruit and occasionally tropical slant. The 2013 opens with a forthcoming layering of Key lime pie, pineapple soufflé, baked green apple, coconut custard, orange zest, vanilla wafer and hazelnut scents. Citric elements temper the opulence on the palate, as lime zest, lemon curd and a hint of orange marmalade bring brightness, while nutmeg, cardamom, clove, vanilla wafer and hazelnut flavors add depth. The finish is full and food-worthy and this delicious wine is nearing maturity. 300 cases produced.
The producer found out after planting this site in 1969 that half of what it thought was Old Wente selection is the Rued clone, also known as the Chardonnay musque selection. Caramel and butterscotch greet the nose on entry before lushly lean streaks of apple skin and mango weave their way on the dappled palate. There's a compelling crispness to the finish. V.B. 5/1/2016
