HILLIARD BRUCE PINOT NOIR "SUN", STA. RITA HILLS 2012
NVWE Notes: If still giving the impression of youth, the nose of this lovely Pinot is already rich and distinctive, as scents of blueberry, dark boysenberry, dark plum jam, pomegranate, blood orange, sumac berry, toffee, tobacco and anise all glide forth. Things seem a bit more jammy and darkly ripe on the palate, where tobacco, graphite, foresty hints and anise make a lower-key counterpoint to more vivid flavors of red, blue and black fruits. The finish is succulent, palate-coating and long, but tighter and denser than what preceded it. Expect this already delicious wine to get better for another four or five years. 567 cases produced.
Vivid ruby-red. Black raspberry, cherry and incense on the pungent, intensely perfumed nose. Fleshy and expansive, offering energetic red and dark berry preserve flavors, a hint of cola and a suave note of candied lavender. Picks up spiciness with air and finishes on a smoky dark berry note, with excellent thrust and length and supple tannins that sneak in late.
Seeing the same 18 months in French oak and 100% destemming, the 2012 Pinot Noir Sun is the most dense and concentrated in the lineup. A medium to full-bodied Pinot Noir, it has rocking aromas and flavors of blackberry, cassis, spice-box, licorice and toast to go with a layered, mouthfilling style on the palate. I love the fruit and texture here, but it also has solid depth and structure, and should evolve gracefully.
