KELLER ESTATE SYRAH "ROTIE", PETALUMA GAP SONOMA COAST 2012
San Francisco Wine Panel
NVWE Notes: The nose of this highly evolved yet clearly age-worthy wine is an intriguing perfume expressive of blue and red fruits, loads of savory spice and dried herbal notes poised above gamey-earthy undercurrents. It fans-out on the palate as a melange of dark plum, blueberry, mulberry cobbler, red and black currant, violets and dark red rose, peppercorn, date sugar, dark pipe tobacco, leather, star anise, dried sage and rosemary, with undertones of bacon smoke and soy sauce. It is plush in texture and richly satisfying already, and the finish - a blast of mulberry, plum, peppercorn and black licorice - keeps the tannins at bay. Great now with dark fatty meats and winter stews, it will be a much grander wine if allowed two or three years of cellar-time. 465 cases produced.
Named for the famous wine from France and similarly made by co-fermenting Syrah with Viognier, this cool-climate offering features a delightfully juicy backbone of red fruit and savory earth. Floral and spicy, it remains elegant on the palate and will take on additional nuance in the cellar. Drink now through 2020.
