PAUL LATO PINOT NOIR "PROSPECT", SIERRA MADRE VINEYARD, SANTA MARIA VALLEY 2017
NVWE Notes: This is the third great vintage in a row for this vineyard and that beauty is fully realized in this wine. The aromas are a rich cornucopia of Italian Maraschino cherry, black cherry, wild cherry, Santa Rosa plum, pink rose, pink peppercorn, sumac berry, sandalwood, nut husk, sweet tobacco and star anise scents. It proves as plush and expressive as hoped on the mid-palate, if seemingly more youthful. The flavors are a semi-juicy layering of wild cherry, Italian Maraschino cherry, cranberry-relish, whortleberry, red plum, white rose, dried orange peel and pink peppercorn tied to sweet-savory spice notes. Tannin and youthful zest fail to blunt the food-friendly character of the wine’s long-lasting finish, so although it has four years or more of steady growth ahead, it could be the star of the dinner party tonight.
