NVWE Notes: Both spicier and more powerful than in the past, the new “Mason’s” Cab reflects the concentration of the tiny 2015 crop. The nose is a piquant, focused, heady perfume of black cherry, Italian Maraschino cherry, cherry pit, black currant, mocha, black licorice, cola, clove, star anise and laurel scents. It proves as juicy as expected on the palate, where substantial tannic grip sits beneath the mulberry, black fig, black currant, dark cherry, licorice root, clove, bitter chocolate and graphite flavors. The finish is as heavy in body as the mid-palate, if a bit more savory at this point. Best with darkly flavored meats for now, it wants three years to fully mellow its power. 600 cases made.
Modest yet complex aromas lead to an intense profile, making this a candidate for short-term cellaring, with powerful flavors and tannins. Best from 2021 through 2030.
