LIMERICK LANE SYRAH ESTATE HEAD PRUNED RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY 2011
A fabulous effort, the 2011 Syrah Hail Mary is a blend of 92% Syrah and 8% Grenache made from 100% whole clusters (stems). The winery considered their biggest gamble to be fermenting using all stems outside in an open-top fermenter. They ignored it for a number of weeks, except to do daily stomping, and the result is a dense plum/ruby-colored wine with lots of roasted meat, kirsch liqueur, blackberry, cassis, incense and peppery spice characteristics. This earthy, rich, full-throttle Syrah nearly overloads the sensory perceptors. Despite the wine’s intensity, it finished only at 14.3% alcohol, which surprised me. Drink it over the next 4-5 years.Drink 2013 - 2018 WA # , #210 (Dec 2013)
NVWE Notes: This is a darkly rich and rather dramatic Syrah, with lots of fruit and spice and plenty of backbone. The nose layers scents of blackberry, black currant, black fig, dates, licorice root, mocha, tobacco, roasted herbs, allspice and graphite. That fruit and spice mix proves just as deep and juicy on the palate, where the finish is ultra long, focused and gutsy. Certain to get better and better over the next five years, it will make a fine companion to steaks and dark roasts right now. 160 cases produced.
