MELVILLE PINOT NOIR ESTATE "BLOCK M" STA. RITA HILLS 2014
The 2014 Pinot Noir Block M is the most structured and tightly wound of these wines. Dark red and purplish stone fruits, cherry pit and white pepper give the 2014 much of its high-toned personality. The 2014 offers lovely density and yet the whole clusters give the wine a sense of weightlessness that is hugely appealing. The 80% whole clusters are mostly felt in the wine's structure, but less in its flavor profile.
NVWE Notes: This muscular bottling seems a masculine counterpoint to Melville’s “Terraces” Pinot. It is big in scale, with guts and grip to spare, and the tightly-wrapped black cherry, strawberry, blueberry, teaberry, boysenberry, pomegranate, sassafras, sumac, sandalwood, baking-spice and mineral-edged aromas convey an impression of compressed power. It is lean and concentrated on the palate, where sandalwood, anise and mineral flavors make a pretty statement, while the wines deep core of fruit keeps its reserve. The finish is lingering and has a chiseled focus, yet the wines youth is very evident. It should well reward five years and more of cellar time. 882 6-packs produced.
Red currants, dried rose petals, cured meats and savory herbs all emerge from the 2014 Pinot Noir Block M, which is medium-bodied, elegant and supple on the palate, yet has a solid kick of savory tannin that gives me pause. There's lots of tannin here, and it needs 2-3 years of cellaring to come together. eRobertParker.com # , #226 (Aug 2016) Drink 2018 - 2024 Jeb Dunnuck
