MELVILLE PINOT NOIR "SANDY'S", STA. RITA HILLS 2016
NVWE Notes: 2016 Melville Pinot Noir Estate “Sandy’s” Santa Rita Hills
Elegantly creamy, fruit-laden, if youthfully reserved at opening, the nose of this beauty delivers a perfume of Bing cherry, Amarena cherry, dried cranberry, red currant jelly, blood orange, red rose petal, sumac berry, pink & Schezuan peppercorn, clove, baking-spice, sweet tobacco and vanilla: all in a deeply rich yet feminine harmony. Sweet fresh and dried fruits dominate on the palate, where Amarena cherry, bottled red cherry, Bing cherry/strawberry cobbler, “red vines”, red currant jelly, lingonberry, dried red rose, toffee, baking-spice, hazelnut nougat, sweet tobacco, cardamom, sandalwood, star anise and a hint of iron ore-like minerality roll-out seductively. The finish is plush and lingering, yet piquantly fruity, and a luxurious palate-feel suppresses the wine’s substantial spine of tannin beautifully. Truly scrumptious now, it will be considerably grander five years from now and for many years after. 899 cases produced.

The 2016 Pinot Noir Estate Sandy's is impeccable. Gracious and lifted, as these wines tend to be, the Sandy's also has lovely beams of underlying tannin that give the wine its persistence and overall shape. Orange peel, cranberry, white pepper, mint and red berry are all beautifully lifted throughout. The 50% whole clusters add aromatic intensity without overpowering the wine. Simply put, the 2016 is a model of total elegance and finesse. Don't miss it.
