ONX TEMPRANILLO BLEND "PRAETORIAN", TEMPLETON GAP PASO ROBLES 2013
NVWE Notes: Altogether exotic yet impressively harmonious, this delicious red should only get better over the next four or five years. The nose is a panorama of fresh & dried fruit and sweet & savory spice scents, with dried herb and peppercorn accents. On the palate, things are both gutsy and sweet-natured as flavors of blueberry, black raspberry, black currant, crab apple syrup, violet, fig preserves, rice pudding, dates, tea, leather, star anise, pink, white and Schezuan peppercorn, clove and mocha seem to tumble from the glass, seeming ever longer as the wine airs. It should prove to be notably food-friendly. A blend of 61% Tempranillo, 23% Malbec, 14% Mourvedre & 2% Alicante Bouschet. 352 cases made.
Glass-staining ruby. Exotic, perfumed scents of black raspberry, mulberry and incense, with complicating suggestions of peppery spices and woodsmoke. Supple and lively on the palate, offering sappy red and dark berry flavors that become sweeter with air. The red fruit quality drives a long, spicy finish that's shaped by firm but well-knit tannins.
An outstanding wine from winemaker Brian Brown, the 2013 Praetorian is an interesting blend of 61% Tempranillo, 23% Malbec, 14% Mourvedre and the rest Alicante Bouschet. Aged 17 months in French oak, it's loaded with notions of spice, cedar plank, mint and black raspberry and sweet cassis fruit. Pure, balanced, with fine tannin and medium to full-bodied richness, drink it over the coming 7-8 years, although it might last longer.
