PAUL LATO MALVASIA ORANGE WINE "BATANA", LARNER VINEYARD, BALLARD CANYON 2016
NVWE Notes: Ultra-rich and layered with floral suggestions and honey-dipped fruit, the nose opens with scents of orange peel tea, orange marmalade, chamomile, jasmine, honeysuckle, lavender, rosemary, candied lime, dried mango, lychee, baklava, creme brulee, brioche and white pepper. It is more tightly-wound in the mouth, where bittersweet nut husk and Seville orange peel notes and a hint of Cognac-laced caramel lead into apple skin, passion fruit, lychee, peach pit, dried mango, honeysuckle, jasmine, brioche and chestnut honey flavors. The finish is just as rich, but its hard dry, with Seville orange, mango, apricot and chestnut honey the lingering themes. It is decadent enough for fois gras. 20 cases produced.
The 2016 Malvasia Bianca Batana is a very pretty if quirky wine. Paul Lato gave the 2016 30 days on the skins, which brings out an extra dimension of structure relative to the straight Malvasia Bianca, along with a set of richer, orange-tinged aromas and flavors. A structured, resonant wine, the 2016 exudes class and nuance, with terrific freshness and fabulous balance. This is one of the most intriguing wines I have tasted from Paul Lato. Drink 2018 - 2024.
