PAUL LATO PINOT NOIR "DUENDE", GOLD COAST VINEYARD, SANTA MARIA VALLEY 2014
Moving to the 2014 Pinot Noirs, this is a vintage that Paul loves. The 2014 Pinot Noir Goldcoast Vineyard Duende is from the Santa Maria Valley and comes from the Martini clone, which was selected by UC Davis from Martini’s Carneros vineyard. It's the lightest colored in the lineup and it shines for its elegance, nuances and finesse more so than overt power and richness. Notes of strawberries, light spice, sappy flowers and hints of charcoal all flow to a medium-bodied, pretty, silky Pinot Noir that has fine tannin, no hard edges and a great finish. Aged 14 months in 25% new French oak, it should evolve nicely for a decade. eRobertParker.com # , #226 (Aug 2016) Drink 2016 - 2026 Jeb Dunnuck
NVWE Notes: Distinctive in both its aromatic complexities and textural delivery, this is a tasty Pinot destined to provide fascination for years. Its scents of dried red plums, dried currants, Panetone fruits, strawberry cobbler, blood orange, ginger snaps, sumac berry, rosemary, bay and tobacco leaf and pu-erh tea add up to a perfume that is deep, yet never overpowering. In the mouth, tannic grip joins notes of cherry pit and nut husk to bring a piquancy to the mouth-feel and bring raciness to what would otherwise be mouth-coating body. Young, lean and very long, the finish is as appealing a mirror of the aromas as could be hoped for, and intriguing woody tones and hints of cardamon and wild flowers come in at the end. This one should evolve nicely over the next five to eight years. 98 cases made.
