PAUL LATO PINOT NOIR "DUENDE", GOLD COAST VINEYARD, SANTA MARIA VALLEY 2015
NVWE Notes: Duende is the outlier among Lato’s Pinots: expressive more of dried fruits and Autumnal spices than brashness. The aromas promise an elegant creaminess and scents of bottled red cherry, cherry pie, grenadine, dried cranberry, Panetone, floral sachet, caramel, toasted grain, celery seed, star anise and dried maple leaves fan-out in equal almost proportion. It is medium-bodied, palate-coating and youthfully “grippy”, yet is already a satisfying, focused dinner wine. The flavors are a supple if zesty layering of dried red cherry, bottled red cherry, cherry pit, grenadine, Panetone, dried orange peel tea, star anise, white pepper and nut husk. It’s melding of creamy-textured dry fruits and piquancy is unique, and this exotic Pinot can be expected to keep improving for five years and beyond.
Always the most lifted of the Paul Lato wines, the 2015 Pinot Noir Duende Gold Coast Vineyard is aromatic, perfumed and gracious in feel. Hints of earthiness, game, smoke and autumn leaves give the wine a slightly sauvage feel in 2015, but there is also lovely purity to the bright red berry fruit.
