PAUL LATO PINOT NOIR "SEABISCUIT", ZOTOVICH VINEYARD, STA. RITA HILLS 2015
NVWE Notes: Lean, yet complex and focused, the nose of this year’s Zotovich Pinot opens with scents of Bing cherry, black raspberry, strawberry-rhubarb pie, red currant, red rose, dried cranberry, cherry pit, straw flowers, sumac, pencil shavings and sandalwood. In the mouth, it proves structurally firm yet surprisingly weightless considering it’s overall scale. Flavors of dried cranberry, dried raspberry, strawberry “fruit leather”, dried orange peel, sumac berry, celery seed, graphite and undercurrents of chalky minerality are all well-delineated on the palate, while its lingering finish and depth are suggestive of elegance to come. Tannic grip, zest and firming minerality prompt service with fatty meats at this stage, but a few years of cellar-time will bring polish, suppleness and even greater expression.
The 2015 Pinot Noir Seabiscuit Zotovich Vineyard is open-knit, medium in body and quite gracious, as wines from this sandy site often are. Kirsch, hard candy and lifted floral notes all develop in the glass. In 2015, the Seabiscuit veers toward the riper, more candied end of the flavor spectrum. Drink 2018 - 2025 Antonio Galloni Sep 2017
