PAUL LATO PINOT NOIR "SEABISCUIT", ZOTOVICH VINEYARD, STA. RITA HILLS 2016
NVWE Notes: Bright, focused, super-elegant and altogether captivating, this is much the best “Seabiscuit” yet released. The aromas are a genteel, vivid, laser-focused perfume of sour red cherry, red plum, red apple skin, lingonberry, wild strawberry, raspberry coulis, cinnamon “red hots”, pomegranate, pink peppercorn, white rose, mace and sweet baking-spice. The texture proves wonderfully racy and the fruit brilliantly piquant, as a cascade of intense yet seemingly weightless flavors of red cherry, cherry pit, red apple skin, lingonberry, pomegranate, wild strawberry, pink rose, sumac berry, pink peppercorn, mace and star anise sail across the palate. The finish never stops, and an ending blast of cranberry-orange relish and Campari fuels the memory. Irresistibly delicious, it could conceivably grow more so, if allowed time in the cellar.
The 2016 Pinot Noir Seabiscuit Zotovich Vineyard reveals distinctive aromas of candied peel, wood smoke, red berries and plum preserve that are already nicely integrated with its generous framing of new oak. On the palate, it's medium-bodied, deep and savory, with a fine-grained but firm chassis of tannin that asserts itself on the finish. I suspect this will fill out considerably with a year or two in bottle.Drink Date: 2018 - 2028 William Kelley 27th Apr 2018
