PAUL LATO PINOT NOIR "SUERTE", SOLOMON HILLS VINEYARD, SANTA MARIA VALLEY 2016
NVWE Notes: Exotic as it is intense, this is a dramatic, distinctive and age-worthy Pinot Noir. The nose is a deeply-rich, complex marriage of wild strawberry, cherry-rhubarb pie, Amarena cherry, cranberry relish, blood orange, raspberry galette, violet, pink rose, orange blossom, clove, baking-spice, sandalwood, toffee, pine straw and dried herb scents. On the palate, it is heavy-rich in body and fruit-laden, yet deep in savory spice, as its fruity rush of red cherry, whortleberry, candied apple, raspberry, red boysenberry and Mr. Lincoln rose is counter-pointed by notes of mace, tobacco, saddle leather, hazelnut, morel mushroom, dried rosemary and oregano. All this opulence disguises the wine’s tannic structure admirably, so current drinking gives pleasure, but those with cellars will see a grander wine in five years and after.
The 2016 Pinot Noir Solomon Hills Vineyard Suerte offers up a dramatic bouquet of plum preserve, crushed currants, rose petal, raspberries and vine smoke, framed—like all Lato's reds—by a lavish application of high-quality new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, velvety and succulent, with a layered mid-palate, polished tannins and a long, tangy finish. Drink Date: 2018 - 2028 William Kelley 27th Apr 2018
