PHILIPPONNAT CHAMPAGNE, BLANC DE NOIRS 2008
NVWE Notes: There is a marked contrast between the aromas and flavors of this intense bubbly, as the nose is expansive and decidedly feminine, while the palate-feel is classically masculine. The aromas are a cascade of candied orange, kumquat, yellow peach tart, brioche and buttered croissant scents, over racy lemon sorbet and chalk undercurrents. A piquant combination of hard mineral elements suggestive of chalk and slate and cuttingly zesty notes centered on candied lemon peel takes center stage on the palate and through a gutsy and lingering finish, while the wines more prettified flavors of orange, peach, beeswax, brioche and croissant stay in the background. The result is a wine ideally built for service with classic seafood-centered appetizers. 100% Pinot Noir.
Philipponnat's 2008 Blanc de Noirs is fabulous. Dried apricot, cherry, flowers, almonds and spices grace the palate as this weightless yet expressive Champagne opens up in the glass. Pliant and distinctly red-toned in its flavor profile, the 2008 impresses for its sensual personality and impeccable overall balance. The 2008 is made entirely from 1er and Grand Cru fruit, and was disgorged in April 2014 Drink 2014 - 2020. Antonio Galloni Nov 2014
