NVWE Notes: Rich and spicy, the nose of this juicy Bordeaux grape blend is a pretty melange of mulberry, blackberry, dark cherry galette, black fig, vanilla, date sugar, clove, black tea and sweet dark tobacco scents. It proves as rich in texture and as flavorful as predicted in the mouth, where polished tannins and a bit of cherry pit-like zest bring food-worthy firmness and balance. All of these elements follow into a lingering finish of surprising class. It is built for flavorful roasts and richly-sauced entrees. A blend of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Cabernet Franc & 24% Merlot.
RENWOOD "THE CLEAVER" PROPRIETARY RED BLEND AMADOR COUNTY 2016
NVWE Notes: This blend of 53% Petite Sirah, 32% Zinfandel, 13% Syrah & 2% Barbera offers the color and spice of its Rhone grape influences while retaining the minerality and sleek elegance of Amador Zin. Notes of red current, red plum, tart red cherry, pink peppercorn and dried rose counterpoint a firming core of iron ore-like minerality both to the nose and through lingering flavors, where hints of cinnamon join in. Food-friendly and ready to enjoy, it will be a fine companion to pork roast and roasted fowl.
SOBON BARBERA AMADOR COUNTY 2018
NVWE Notes: If youthfully tight at opening, the nose of this fine Barbera expands to reveal aromas of cranberry sauce, sweet-pickled crab apples, ripe red plums and dark cherries, with background notes of peppercorn, pink rose and cinnamon-candied red apple. It is appropriately fresh and zesty on the palate, where the mouth-feel is sleek and the refreshing flavors lingering. At the finish, notes of dried cranberry, orange zest and cinnamon stand out. A fine dinner wine at this point, it will be even finer in twelve months. 5000 cases produced.
TESTAROSSA CHARDONNAY "CUVEE LOS GATOS", MONTEREY 2018
NVWE Notes: Elegant and gently creamy, this lovely Chardonnay opens with aromas of baked apple, white peach tart, honey, nutmeg and a hint of lemon blossom. On the palate, flavors of tarte tatin, peach pie, toasted meringue, nutmeg and nougat fan-out in a supple, lingering, quietly zesty, dinner-friendly melange. Built for winter’s richer fare, it is ready to enjoy.
GAINEY SAUVIGNON BLANC SANTA YNEZ VALLEY 2018
NVWE Notes: Although never flamboyant, the aromas and flavors of this tasty and refreshing wine are complex and distinctive. In the nose, golden fig, gooseberry, lime, cucumber and hints of white pepper and cilantro create a focused aromatic expression. Mineral undercurrents and a suggestion of ripe guava join in on the palate. These firm the texture and add a bit of balancing richness to the zesty fruit. The finish is lingering and, although the wine is light in body, it should stand up to richer fare, such as Linguine con Vongole.
UNION SACRE GEWURZTRAMINER "BELLE DE NUIT", RIBOLI VINEYARD, SANTA LUCIA HIGHLANDS 2018
NVWE Notes: Spicy, bright and forthcoming, the nose of this refreshing gulper delivers a push of white pepper, jasmine, lemon peel, gooseberry and lychee scents that are immediately appealing. Grapefruit zest, lemon peel, honeydew melon, lychee, gooseberry, jasmine, honeysuckle and white pepper make a bright, focused, lingering impression in the mouth, where the wine proves just as intensely flavorful as expected. Terrific as a sipper or appetizer wine, it would work nicely with Thai curries or even oyster-cornbread stuffed turkey.
