NVWE Notes: Attractive from the moment the cork is pulled, the aromas of this impressively varietal Cab are a focused mélange of cherry pit, Italian Maraschino cherry, purple plum, blueberry, rose, violet, cedar, vanilla and baking-spice. It is sleek and polished in the mouth, where tannic grip and fruit zest bring fine structure to flavors of red cherry, cherry pit, violet, blueberry, cranberry, red currant and red rose, which harmonize nicely with sweet-savory counterpoints of cedar, baking spices, sweet tobacco leaf and a touch of mint. A pleasure now, it should evolve nicely for another two years or so. A blend of Happy Canyon and Santa Barbara Highlands area grapes. 100% Cabernet, 1200 cases produced.
IRON & SAND CABERNET SAUVIGNON PASO ROBLES 2017
NVWE Notes: Impressive for both ripeness and concentration, the nose of this textbook “Paso Robles” Cabernet offers heady-rich aromas of black currant, mulberry, Asian plum sauce, date sugar, vanilla, peppery bouillon, black tea and dark forest loam. It proves less heady on the palate and moves toward a more dinner-worthy elegance, as zestier flavors of Italian Maraschino cherry, black currant and mulberry join earthy-savory elements and polished tannins to create a more classic textural impression. The lingering finish offers a deft balance between fruity juiciness and savory richness. This ready to enjoy Cab is built for winter’s dark roasts and richly-flavored stews. 3000 cases made.
HOUSE OF CARDS CABERNET SAUVIGNON, NAPA VALLEY, 2017
NVWE Notes: This is an elegant, supple Cabernet with pretty aromas suggestive of dark cherry, wild cherry, red currant jam, vanilla and sweet baking spices. It proves darker and offers more savory complexity on the palate, where notes of hazelnut husk, sandalwood and a hint of star anise counterpoint fruit that moves toward black currant and black cherry. It is medium-bodied and built for dinner service, as tannin, oak notes and quietly zesty fruit create a firmer, weightier finish. If likely to be more complex next year, it is otherwise ready to enjoy.
